Social Outreach - Sabera's Dialysis Foundation |

|
The Sabera's Dialysis Foundation falls within the ambit of the Social Outreach Program of the Sultan Bahu Centre. This program is intended to give the less fortunate people a chance to dialysis. The brains and strength behind this program Faqir Saeed Ally Sarwari Qaderi (affectionately called Sheikh) had lost his beloved wife Appa Sabera, whom the foundation is named after, to kidney failure. Alhamdulilah this program has seen many smiles and appreciations. This program is offered to the diverse community and is not merely aimed at a specific group.
The Sultan Bahu Centre sponsors patients who are unable to afford the treatment for the dialysis. The program is facilitated in association with the South African Dialysis Foundation Clinic in Ormonde, Johannesburg as well as the National Renal Care Clinics nationally. These clinics offer dialysis service in a well established dialysis treatment centre and make possible the treatment of the patients sponsored by the Sabera's Dialysis Foundation.

- The Kidney Function
The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess water from the blood. The kidneys also produce certain hormones that have important functions in the body.
- The Condition
Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys partly or completely lose their ability to carry out normal functions.
- The Treatment
Dialysis is a life-saving option until a suitable organ donor is found, but it is not a cure for end-stage renal failure. In end-stage renal disease, kidney functions can be replaced only by dialysis or by kidney transplantation. There are 2 types of dialysis.
Hemodialysis involves circulation of blood through a filter on a dialysis machine.
Peritoneal dialysis utilizes the lining membrane (peritoneum) of the abdomen as a filter to clean blood and remove excess fluid. A catheter is implanted into the abdomen by a minor surgical procedure.
- The Cost
The cost of dialysis is estimated at R79 000 to 80 000 per annum excluding medication. The Sabera's Dialysis Foundation absorbs this cost and allows the patient a second chance on life.
Like any other organization we are governed by the amount of people we can accommodate at any one given time.
